Lactation Support from Jillian Carter, RN, IBCLC

Working with Jillian

Jillian works out of the MilkMatters Albany office and the MilkMatters Green Island office. She also offers telehealth visits and limited home visits for established clients.

Jillian tends to book up! Families interested in working with Jillian after delivery are strongly encouraged to establish care during pregnancy by booking a Prenatal Consult. Clients who have had a Prenatal Consult are guaranteed care after delivery.

Currently pregnant

Schedule a Prenatal Consult to establish care during your pregnancy! Your Prenatal Consult is an opportunity for us to identify potential challenges and provide anticipatory guidance. Jillian will provide recommendations about equipment, like breast pumps with appropriate flanges, and skills like hand expression. We recommend scheduling a Prenatal Consult for 2-4 months prior to your due date.

Jillian is currently booking Prenatal Consults for clients with all future due dates.

Already delivered

Jillian is accepting a very limited number of new clients who have already delivered. To request an appointment, click the “New Client Waitlist” button and complete the form. Priority is given to individuals with complex cases who have already sought help from other sources, like another lactation specialist or healthcare provider. Jillian or her Administrative Assistant will offer selected individuals appointments as they become available.

Alternatively, consider booking with another MilkMatters Lactation Consultant.

Oh, you’re a planner who likes all the details? Same.

The typical experience goes something like this:

  • During pregnancy, about 2-4 months prior to your due date, you’ll have a Prenatal Consult, in the office or virtual. (Note, Jillian tends to book up, so you’ll want to get this scheduled months in advance.) You’ll get to know one another and talk through any anticipated bumps in the road. You’ll put Jillian’s number in your phone and she’ll put your due date on her calendar.

  • In addition to your one-on-one Prenatal Consult, you’ll take classes in our Prenatal Series. These classes provide education on what to expect through your breastfeeding journey, from the intense early days all the way through weaning.

  • When you deliver, send Jillian a message and schedule your home visit for a day soon after you’re home from the hospital. At that Initial Consult with baby, Jillian will address common concerns for those early days, like ensuring baby’s getting enough to eat and latching is comfortable.

  • If you need extra appointments at any point, Jillian can add those in, but generally, you’ll come to the office when your baby is around 3 weeks and 6 weeks old, and then choose either an office visit or virtual consult for 12 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, and whenever you wean.

More about what appointments include and prices for self-pay clients can be found here. Insurance info is here.

Jillian took the time to understand my specific challenges and tailored her guidance to meet my needs. Her patience and encouragement were invaluable, helping me to build confidence and overcome initial difficulties. She was always available for follow-up questions and provided ongoing support that made me feel truly cared for.

More about Jillian

When Jillian started as a postpartum nurse in 2010, she learned from the families she worked with that breastfeeding wasn’t as easy as she’d always thought. Like many people, she’d assumed that breastfeeding would just automatically happen, and when she saw new families struggling, she wanted to help. She began studying lactation and practicing what she learned, starting with training as a CLC in 2011.

Jillian continued her studies and became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2015. She accepted a position as a hospital Lactation Consultant, serving families in the postpartum, nursery, NICU, and pediatric units. Seeing a need for community services, Jillian started MilkMatters in 2019. By the summer of 2020, MilkMatters had grown and Jillian left the hospital to focus on serving families in the community full time.

Jillian is a big believer in empowering a family with education and resources to achieve the goals they set. She strongly values a non-judgmental, guilt-free, open, and adaptable approach to feeding and lactation.

As someone who’s needed to work on flexibility and managing anxiety herself, Jillian enjoys working with parents who self-identify as “Type A.” She also loves working with queer families and has lots of practice using they/them pronouns. Additionally, Jillian specializes in induced lactation and lactation after loss.
